    Read the passage that follows:

Almost one fifth of the earth's land is desert. The Sahara, in Africa, is the largest and hottest of all deserts in the world, but the Rub Al-Khali, in the Arabian Peninsula has the largest continuous area of moving sand that covers 250,000 square miles approximately.

In English, the Rub A-Khali means the Empty Quarter, a name that best describes the place where no one lives there permanently. However, Bedouins have let their animals graze there for many centuries.

Recently, geologists and archaeologists guided by Bedouin Arabs have explored the Empty Quarter and discovered old tools used by villagers who had lived in that place between six and nine thousand years ago. Their discoveries prove that the Empty Quarter was not a desert at all. There were lakes and rivers that had helped ancient people to settle in villages on the shores of lakes and banks of rivers in the area. The desert will remain a place of surprises until the explorers, who have found oil and even water beneath the sands of the Empty Quarter, succeed in solving its mysteries.

    Read the following passage:

Many people assume that flying is the safest way to travel. However, in 1996, there were 13 air accidents. The number of deaths in these accidents exceeded 2,000. Experts and passengers are inquiring why flying is becoming more unsafe. In August, 1996, a TWA Boeing crashed into the Atlantic Ocean 12 minutes after take-off. All 230 passengers were killed. In November of the same year, a Kazakh aircraft hit a Saudi Arabian Boeing 747 in the air near the Indian capital, Delhi. This was the world's worst mid-air crash ever to happen.

One possible cause of those accidents is that some passengers are using electronic devices such as mobile phones or computers which send electronic signals that can be harmful to the aircraft's computers. Airlines demand passengers to turn off their devices during take off and landing but some do not obey. Now the airlines' headquarters have issued laws prohibiting using such devices all the time during a flight.

More improvements are needed in air safety. Many authorities want to limit the number of flights in their areas. Experts are also worried about the poor quality of air traffic control that are not at the same standard in all areas where some control equipment are effective, some are defective, while some are have no air traffic control at all. The world must react at once to avoid more air accidents

    Read the passage that follows:

Natural rubber is obtained from rubber trees as a white, milky liquid known as latex. This is treated with acid and dried before being exported to countries all over the world. As the rubber industry developed, more and more rubber was required. Although rubber plantations were established in countries with a hot humid climate, they still could not supply sufficient raw rubber to satisfy the requirements of the developing industry.

It was unsatisfactory for industry to rely on supplies imported from the remote industrial areas of Europe. Besides, it was possible that supplies could be stopped by wars or by shipping troubles.

For many years, attempts were made to produce a substitute for rubber until finally a method was discovered to manufacture synthetic rubber. This new artificial rubber has proven to be in many ways superior, and in some other ways inferior to natural rubber. At present, the world requirements for rubber are so great that both natural and synthetic rubber are still used in large quantities.

    A. Answer the following questions in complete sentences:

Read the passage that follows, then answer the questions that follow:

Everyone is familiar with the tigers as we all have read about them or have seen them in a zoo, a place to see different animals in captivity, when we were children. Like many other animals, the tiger is unlikely to continue to exist in wild areas for much longer. Unless we become a partner with nature by protecting animals instead of killing them, many kinds of animals living on Earth will no longer exist. Experts predict that tigers, like many wild animals around the world, will probably become extinct very soon. Because people are destroying land, killing animals in the rain forests of the Amazon and in the jungles and flat lands of Africa and Asia, many animals are still in danger. Their future is uncertain.

In many countries, people are interested in being partners with nature conservationists. These are people who plan to protect animals from being the victims of Man’s brutality. However, there’s not much chance for many animals unless more people volunteer to assist. In Africa ,for example, the population is rising very quickly. People want to turn the land, where many wild animals live, into farming land. All over the world, factories and big cities are becoming more responsible for protecting the environment. However, pollution still gets into plants and water, killing more living things when eating or drinking.

We need to start caring for wild animals, or our descendants may never see some of them. They may be disappointed in us when they hear or read about the tigers the same way we hear or read about the dinosaurs.

    A. Answer the following questions in complete sentences:
