Punctuality is a necessary habit in all public afffairs of a civilized society.
Without it, nothing could ever be brought to a conclusion; every thing would be in a state of chaos. Only in a sparsely- populated rural community is it possible to disregard it. Usually there can be some tolerance of unpunctuality. The intellectual, who is working on some difficult problem, has everything co-ordinated and organizedfor the matter in hand. He is therefore forgiven, if late for a dinner party. But people are often reproached for unpunctuality when their only fault is cutting things fine. It is hard for energetic, quick-minded people to waste time, so they are often tempted to finish a job before setting out to keep an appoinment. If no accidents occur on the way, like punctured tyres, diversions of traffic, they will
    be on time.

    A Passage to India

A Passage to India is a great novel written by E.M.Forster. The title of A
Passage to India refers to different things. It may mean a political passage it India because it concerns with the occupation and the relationship between the colonizer and the colonized. In addition, it may mean a discovery passage into Indian cultural and oriental society. For instance, the trip to the caves, Mrs.Moore, and Adela experience in it. In addition, it may mean a cultural passage as it deals with the clash between tow different cultures (cultural misunderstanding). In addition, it may mean an emotional is spiritual passage to Indian e.g.Mrs.Moore and Adela experiences in the caves. In addition, it may mean a communication passage to India e.g., when Fielding attempts to have a relationship with Aziz but their relation is not flexible

Description of Chandrapore (Part one – Chapter one)
    ________________________________________
Chandrapore is indeed a small India of the 19th- 20th , a country searching for its destiny. It is an ancient land ruled by British government. Chandrapore town, with its Indian areas and its British station complete, with its exclusive club, highlights the themes of division and union, fission and fusion, and the self and the non-self.
In fact, Forster's description for Chandrapore is based on his knowledge of Bankipore, a town near Panta in Bihar. Chandrapore's streets are mean and its temples are ineffective. Though a few fine houses are existed, Chandrapore is neither large nor beautiful, and there are no paintings or carvings in the bazaars. 'The very wood seems made of mud, the inhabitants of mud moving' and the town symbolizes some low but indestructible غير قابلة للتلف of life; this is the Indian part of Chandrapore.
There is a complete contrast between this Indian part of Chandrapore and the civil station built and designed by the British; where the city appears to be a totally different place. It is a city of gardens, a tropical pleasance washed by the gangs. The roads intersect at right angles and share nothing with the city except the sky. The sky of Chandrapore stands for space and its great vault قبة السماء seems to be lit at night with innumerable lamps. The sky is very strong; it takes its strength from the sun. The endless earth of Chandrapore is interrupted by the fists and fingers of the extraordinary caves. 'Fists' refer to the aggressive عدائي or evil quality of the rocks in the Marabar Hills.

    SYMBOLS
Symbols are objects, characters, or colors used to represent abstract ideas or concepts. A Passage to India is a wonderful novel written by E.M.Forster. In this novel, the novelist uses many symbols. For example, in the first chapter Forster introduces a major symbol, which is the "sky" which settles everything. He uses the sky as symbol of inclusiveness" it has nothing hideous in it, and only the view is beautiful; it shares nothing with the city except the overarching sky". Another symbol, which is used in this novel, is, Bridge-Party. It is "a party to bridge the gulf between east and west". The purpose for this party is to show Mrs.Adela and Mrs.Moore the real Indians as they ask;" I only want to meet those Indians whom you come across socially". In this party, we see tow camps and Indians stand alone in the party, which suppose to welcome them. Therefore, the party is a symbol of impossibility of friendship between English and Indians.
Another symbol, which is used in this novel, is the wasp. It a symbol of British people. Both of them, British, and the wasp are "pretty". In addition, the wasp is an attractive creature and the British is civil people. Moreover, both of them are quite. In addition, the wasp is an evil insect and the British have a devilish plan.
Another symbol, which is used in this novel, is the green bird. Adela and Ronny notice it sitting in the tree above them after they agree to break off their engagement and Adela asks Ronny what the name of that green bird is "Do you know what the name of that green bird up above us?" Ronny does not know, which confirms Adele's feeling that nothing in India is identifiable. Green bird is linked to the simple minds of the characters of Ronny and Adela. In addition, it shows us that Ronny lacks intellectuality. Moreover, it stands for the mysterious Indians atmosphere.
The ghost is another symbol, which is used in this novel. It stands for superstitions. It also represents the dependent nature of Indians who are not intellectuals. They are an example of the "uncanny" mysterious Indian atmosphere.

    CULTURAL MISUNDERSTANDING
Cultural misunderstanding is one of the major themes in the novel A Passage to India. In this novel, there are sorts of misunderstanding situations which appear different time. For instance, Bridge-Party tells us more about the misunderstanding between English and Indians.
Another situation, which shows us the theme of Cultural misunderstanding, is at Fielding tea party. In this party, Ronny annoys to see Adela with Aziz and Godbole. He tells Fielding that he does not like to see an English girl left smoking with tow Indians "I don’t like to see an English girl left smoking with tow Indians". He believes that Indians with their cultural do not deserve the least amount of attention or even care from a British young woman like Adela. In addition, when Aziz gives his collar to Fielding who forgets his, Ronny who came into the party to pick Adela misunderstands Aziz behavior and considers it an act of rudeness and lack of test in Indian side.
Another situation, which shows us the theme of Cultural misunderstanding, is when the collector says in the club "they paid the other Indians to make you late". He believes that Aziz is planned everything to take advantage for Adela. We considers this as a cultural misunderstanding because the collector analyses the whole dilemma of Aziz as a calculating criminal act for which Aziz has planned for a long time.
Another situation, which shows us the theme of Cultural misunderstanding, is when Ronny tells Adela "they all hates us". That because he is liven under assumption that Indians and their cultural are representation of evil. Also, the assumption that all Indians hate all British and there is no chance of any possible communication between the tow different cultures. For him Indians are either criminals or spies.

    Marabar caves
The Marabar caves and what happens to Adela in them are the pivotal moment in the novel. The descriptions of the caves emphasize their nothingness" nothing, nothing attaches to them"", nothing is inside them", and"nothing embraces the whole of India, nothing nothing and that was Akbar, s mistake". In each of these quotes, it is striking how the word" nothing" is always used twice" nothing, nothing". The word, nothing, does not appear by accident, it suggests an important feature of the caves.

In addition, the caves are older than anything else in the earth is "to call them' uncanny' suggests ghost, and they are older than all spirit". Also, the person feels when he looks at them that the word" extraordinary" is repeated by everything. Therefore, the Marabar caves represent the mysterious of India, which cannot be grasped by colonizers.

The surrounding atmosphere of caves are silence "a spiritual silence which invaded more senses than ear". Therefore, the silence is a spiritual silence because it affects senses rather than the ears. In addition, the life inside the caves is static life "life went on as usual but has not consequences". It is a state of stagnation and fixation. Moreover, there is no any sort of connection between the real world and the world of senses"everthing seemed cut off at its root, and therefore infected with illusion". Things lost their own distinctive features. Also, we can notice the illusive nature of the caves when Mrs. Moore murmured to herself" A horrid, stuffy place really"

    Postcolonolism
Postcolonial criticism is a literary theory. It is a theory that handles the relationship between the colonizer and the colonized. It concentrates on the main features of both camps as showing in the literary work. Postcolonial against universal because if the universal approach starts with ttendcy for equality among people, it soon changes its attitude to prompt the European nations and norms to an evaluated position and the other nations (colonized) into marginalized position.
From postcolonial perception, the colonized nation should start by reclaiming their past to get "voice and identity". For instance, in A passage to India, Indians are supposed to reclaim their past and be proud of their traditions and culture. By doing this they improve themselves and get a voice and identity. So far, Indies participate in their own humilities by accepting insulted and offensive without standing out for their own history. "If the first step towards a postcolonial perspective is to reclaim one's past, then the second is to begin to erode the colonialist ideology by which that past had been devalued". The colonized (India) have to break up the colonizer's ideology that deforms their own past.
Edward said, s orintalism is a major book, which is a specific expose of the Eurocentric universalism. In this book said sets a principle which described "colonizer and colonized" in literary works. They are colonizer's adjectives superior, we, authentic, advanced, and rational. While colonized mass, inferior, other, surrogate, undergroved, crulty,s ensuality, decadence, lazeness, mystical, seductive,ex otic, immoral, douled identity .
The example of" superior" is given when Aziz was called by his head to come immediate for an emergence case that never exist. The head surgeon intents to show superioty over Aziz and to declare the inferior statues of Indian's position doctor. The example of other" and "we is at Bridge Party when the British camps stand alone to form gathering of "we" while Indians are rejected and isolated as "other" in a party that ironically is supposed to welcome them. The example of "authentic, advanced, reational, surrogate, and undergroved" is given by comparing the tow sides of Chandra pore. The example of comparison between the advanced sides of the city and udergroved is clearly given in the first chapter with description of Chandrapore, which is divided into tow incompatible parts. Moreover, Fielding party is an example to show that British is an authentic group that follows rules, conventions, and traditions. On the hand, Indians are described as surrogate, uncivilized and fake nation that is not able to flow rules especially when Ronny notice that Aziz is not wearing his collar.
An example of "cruelty" is given when Aziz was accused of being cruel to expose Mrs.Moore and Adela to the caves, experiences inspit of his knowledge that these caves are a source of horrible experiences foe many people. The example of sensuality is when Indians are represented by Aziz are accused of being sensual\sexual when Aziz was accused of raping Adela and committing adultery deed inspit of his elite position. The example of "laziness" is given at the trip when Godbole arrive late he does not know how to measure time. Also, at the Bridge Party when Indians arrive early. The description of the caves is an example of "exotic". The example of mystical is the green bird and ghosts. Moreover, what happens to Mrs.moore in the caves is seduction. The example of" mass" is given at Bridge Party when Indians stand together as a mass not individuals with special characteristics. The example of "immoral" is the accusation of Aziz being criminal. Finally, the example of doubled identity is Aziz. That is because he first tries to imitate westerns by showing Fielding his wife's picture. This is not an Indian\eastern behavior. Second example is when Aziz tries to being over punctual in his trip to the caves imitating the British footsteps. Last thing is that the way Aziz dressed up indicates his attempt to imitate the westerns style of dressing up.

    List of Irony
Irony is the use of words to express the opposite of the literal meaning. In A Passage to India we have many ironies which are used by E.M.Forster.
راح اكتبها كنقاط لكن لما تكتبينها اشرحي وحطي كوتز ويكون برقراف فورم
-in the Bridge –Party : Indians stand alone in the party which supposed to welcome them
-Fielding,s Tea-Party: in this party Aziz gives his collar to Fielding who forgets his Ronny who comes into the party to pick Adela ,misunderstands Aziz,s behavior and consider it an act of rudeness.
-Fielding and Godbole,s reactions to Aziz dilemma : Fielding who is British supports Aziz while Godbole who is Indian doesn’t do that .
    Mrs.Moore,s death :-
هربت من الهند لترتاح لكنها ماتت وعادت كجثة لتدفن في البلد الذي هربت منه ووسط الناس الذين خرجت من

    بينهم
-the justice in the court :Adela is given a full chance to talk about her experiences while Aziz is deprived such a chance. Also, the white lawyer starts his defends by the assumption that the dark race is attracted to the light one. Also, the absence or the smuggling of Mrs. Moore out of the country though she is the only witness.
-when Adela accused Aziz, people become sympathy with her without knowing details, then she says in the court that he is innocent.

    Objects/Places
Chandrapore: The city in India where the novel takes place. It is a part of British India. In the center of the town is the British club, which excludes Indians from membership.
Marabar Caves: The caves in the Marabar Hills, which Aziz promises to show Mrs. Moore and Adela. The picnic at the caves leads to the infamous incident in which Adela accuses Aziz of improprieties. 'Caves' is the title of the second part of the novel and represent the conflict between British and Indians.
Mosque: Mrs. Moore and Aziz meet at the Mosque and start their friendship. While the caves represent disunion between British and India, the Mosque (the title of the first part of the novel) represents a union.
Bridge Party: Turton’s attempt to bring together British and Indians in a social setting. The party is superficial and unsuccessful.
Wife’s Photograph: Showing Fielding the photograph of his dead wife is Aziz’s way of lifting the purdah [separation of women and men]. By doing this he tries to make a brotherhood relation between them.
Ghost: Part of the religion of India. Mrs. Moore believes she sees one, as she becomes more spiritual. Aziz believes that believing in ghosts is a fault of Indians and sees it as backwards.
Echoes: The haunting sounds that are heard in the caves and afterwards, heard by Adela and Mrs. Moore. The echoes remain in Adela’s head after the picnic and only when she that Aziz is honest, the echoes go away. For Mrs. Moore, the sound of the echoes replaces her memory of religious verses and prayers.
Purdah: The tradition Indian separation and veiling حجاب of women. It is forbidden for a man to see another man's wife's face, unless they are brothers. Dr. Aziz first goes against purdah when he shows Fielding a photograph of his dead wife. He then calls Fielding his brother, and Fielding asks if purdah will be removed when all men are brothers. Later on, Dr. Aziz writes that the society of purdah stands in the way of India's freedom.

    اي شئ بس يكون واضح

And in this calculation I was not deceived. By means of a crow-bar I easily dislodged the bricks, and, having carefully deposited the body against the inner wall, I propped it in that position, while, with little trouble, I re-laid the whole structure as it originally stood. Having procured mortar, sand, and hair, with every possible precaution, I prepared a plaster which could not be distinguished from the old, and with this I very carefully went over the new brick-work. When I had finished, I felt satisfied that all was right. The wall did not present the slightest appearance of having been disturbed. The rubbish on the floor was picked up with the minutest care. I looked around triumphantly, and said to myself -- "Here at least, then, my labor has not been in vain."

My next step was to look for the beast which had been the cause of so much wretchedness; for I had, at length, firmly resolved to put it to death. Had I been able to meet with it, at the moment, there could have been no doubt of its fate; but it appeared that the crafty animal had been alarmed at the violence of my previous anger, and forebore to present itself in my present mood. It is impossible to describe, or to imagine, the deep, the blissful sense of relief which the absence of the detested creature occasioned in my bosom. It did not make its appearance during the night -- and thus for one night at least, since its introduction into the house, I soundly and tranquilly slept; aye, slept even with the burden of murder upon my soul!
