    دمتم بسلام...
The Victorian Characteristics in "Emma" by Jane Austen

The Victorian era commenced in May 1837, when the young 18yo Princess Victoria, who gave her name to that part of history, acceded to the British throne as Queen. The Victorian era ended in January 1901 when the, by then, old Queen popped her clogs. Jane Austen was born in 1775 and died, aged 42, at Winchester (Hampshire), in July 1817 and she is buried in the Cathedral there.

Emma is typical of Jane's novels - in essence, a female oriented one with a female central character - a lassie called Emma Woodhouse. Typically, she was of the upper middle class section of refined Regency/Georgian society, living in a small English village (much like Elizabeth Bingley in Pride and Prejudice). Emma was a very headstrong girl, highly intelligent, with a very high opinion of herself and her capabilities, and regarded herself as some kind of dominatrix in her father's household.

She was one of those intensely irritating and exasperating of females who take it upon themselves to organise the lives of others, whether they wanted it or not. You know the type - meddling in other people's business affairs and private lives as only women can with any effectiveness. Emma Woodhouse was one such. If you think that sounds sexist then it most definitely is as Emma acts in just that sort of way which can only be emulated by another woman, and that's a fact of life, making the negative charge of sexism completely invalid, though feminists would, of course, violently disagree, but most feminists are loopy anyway, so what the hell.

Emma busies herself matchmaking, and her new friend Harriet Smith finds herself being hauled away from a local farmer type by Emma who considers him "unsuitable" even though the poor guy has the hots for Harriet big time, and Emma then tries to hook her up with the young vicar, Mr Elton. Emma arranges so many situations that would bring these two together, hoping that the vicar and Harriet would end up walking down the aisle, but the vicar falls for Emma instead, which kind of throws her somewhat!

Emma, however, has no plans to marry at all - she wants to push others into matrimony instead. Emma is in the happy situation of having a very comfortable home in the village, status in the Highbury village community through family connections, and a substabtial private income in her own right, so she could afford to be as independent as she liked. And she liked. And she liked to run other people's lives for them.

Emma does fancy another bloke though - Frank Churchill, the stepson of her fomer governess - a charming and very personable guy. The story becomes a whole lot more complicated thereafter, and an array of other characters become involved in Emma's life - Jane Fairfax (a girl similar in age to Emma but with no financial means at all to her name - remember, life in those days was hard, really hard, if you had little or no money, as this was about 150 years before the Welfare State and social security in Britain). By this time the vicar Mr Elton returns from Bath with his new bride, a sort of rebound from Emma's earlier rejection. The beautiful and gracious spa town of Bath (Aqua Sulis was the name bestowed on it by the founding Romans) with its healing waters and very refined society, features highly in Jane Austen's novels, and she spent a lot of time there.

The new Mrs Elton, the vicar's wife, eventually becomes very full of herself in village society and soon antagonises Emma by becoming just as irritating and annoying in her own way, and patronises poor Jane Fairfax and treates her appallingly, but Jane manages to keep her feelings of resentment in check.

Emma's feelings for Frank cool down, which is just as well as he has become secretly engaged to Jane. There is one man in the village who really has the measure of Emma - Mr Knightley, and while Emma does her best to push Harriet in the direction of Frank, to spite Jane, but Harriet has other ideas, such as falling for Mr Kinghtley.

This all leads to one mighty set-to during a picnic on top of Box Hill, a well known beauty spot near Dorking, in Surrey. All manner of feathers fly, and the whole picture becomes even more convoluted.

Cutting the long story short, Emma herself finds that Mr Knightley is the man she eventually falls in love with. Three other couplings take shape, finally, and both Emma and Mr Knightley together become some kind of "wise leaders" overseeing social life and all its twists and turns in Highbury village. On the way to that happy state, sweet little Emma, irritating, aggravating, but nevertheless extrenely loveable little Emma, finds that she has had to learn some really hard lessons, and deal with some very humiliating situations.

Emma - only one of Jane Austen's heroines. Jane Austen - a short life she had, but she was about the first of the great female novelists in the world of British literature. Come the Victorian era a few years later, there followed a succession of other female novelists, starting with the three Bronte sisters, all of whom had to write under assumed MALE names in order to secure recognition by publishers, such was the ingrained prejudice against female writers in the early 19th century in this country. Up until that time women were assumed to be incapable of producing literary works of any worth!

"I Wandered Lonely as a Cloud"

I wandered lonely as a cloud
That floats on high o'er vales and hills,
When all at once I saw a crowd,
    A host, of golden daffodils;
Beside the lake, beneath the trees,
Fluttering and dancing in the breeze.

Continuous as the stars that shine
And twinkle on the milky way,
    They stretched in never-ending line
Along the margin of a bay:
Ten thousand saw I at a glance,
Tossing their heads in sprightly dance.

The waves beside them danced; but they
Out-did the sparkling waves in glee:
A poet could not but be gay,
    In such a jocund company:
    I gazed---and gazed---but little thought
What wealth the show to me had brought:

For oft, when on my couch I lie
In vacant or in pensive mood,
They flash upon that inward eye
    Which is the bliss of solitude;
And then my heart with pleasure fills,
    And dances with the daffodils.

    William Wordsworth

    The main Idea

The poet describes his happiness whie being among the nature
because it makes him feel relaxed and joyful

    Explanation:-

The speaker says that, wandering like a cloud floating above hills and valleys, he encountered a field of daffodils beside a lake. The dancing, fluttering flowers stretched endlessly along the shore, and though the waves of the lake danced beside the flowers, the daffodils outdid the water in glee. The speaker says that a poet could not help but be happy in such a joyful company of flowers. He says that he stared and stared, but did not realize what wealth the scene would bring him. For now, whenever he feels "vacant" or "pensive," the memory flashes upon "that inward eye / That is the bliss of solitude," and his heart fills with pleasure, "and dances with the daffodils."

    imagery

1-The poet assmilies himself to acloud to express freedom
2- There is a personification the poet assmiles the flowers to the guests that welcome him
3- there is another personification , the poet assimiles the daffodils to perssons that dance

COLOR="DarkOrange"]Ode to a Nightingale [/COLOR]is a poem by John Keats. It was written in May, 1819, in the garden of the Spaniards
Inn, Hampstead. It was first published in 'Annals of the Fine Arts' in July of the same year. Referred to by critics of the time as "the longest and most personal of the odes," the poem describes Keats' journey into the state of Negative Capability. The poem explores the themes of nature, transience and mortality, the latter being the most personal to Keats, making a direct reference to the death in 1818 of his brother, Tom.

In the poem, Keats imagines the loss of the physical world, and sees himself dead--he uses an abrupt, almost brutal word for it--as a "sod" over which the nightingale sings. The contrast between the immortal nightingale and mortal man, sitting in his garden, is made all the more acute by an effort of the imagination (102). The presence of weather is noticeable in the poem, as spring came early in 1819, which brought nightingales all over the heath. According to Keats' friend, Charles Armitage Brown, a nightingale had built its nest near his home in the spring of 1819. Keats felt a "tranquil and continual joy in her song; and one morning he took his chair from the breakfast table to the grass plot under a plum tree, where he sat for two of three hours." [1]

[edit] Brief analysis This article needs additional citations for verification.
Please help improve this article by adding reliable references. Unsourced material may be challenged and removed. (August 2007)

The ode consists of eight stanzas, each containing ten lines. The rhyme scheme (ababcdecde) has a link to the sonnet form, with each stanza uniting a Shakespearian quatrain (abab) with a Petrarchan sextet (cdecde). This stanzaic prosody is characteristic of Keats's odes, and may well have evolved from his intensive work and theory on the sonnet form (see, for example, "If by Dull Rhymes our English Must be Chained").

The opening lines of the poem make use of heavy vowel sounds to slow them down (e.g. "heart," "aches," "drowsy," and "numbness").

The Hippocrene, referenced in the second stanza, is the legendary fountain of the muses, located on Mt. Helicon.

Keats' relationship with the bird clearly changes as the text progresses and his consciousness drifts into a dreaming, imaginative space. In the first stanza, Keats refers to it with awe, using phrases such as "Light-winged Dryad of the trees," but by the seventh stanza refers to it simply as "bird". Indeed, in the final stanza the speaker addresses the animal as "deceiving elf", implying irritation at the nightingale's hypnotic song for the effect it had on him. Similarly, his views about the nightingale's song change as the poem progresses, the description "high requiem" giving way to "plaintive anthem" in the final stanza.

Heidi Scott indicates that the turn in the poem occurs when Keats repeats the word "Forlorn!" between the penultimate and final stanzas.[2] He is wakened from his close reverie with the bird by the sound of the word "forlorn," and he finds the bird flying away from the poetic dreamspace that provided the atmosphere of most of the ode. Keats's confusion marks the closing lines of the poem, in which he asks: "Was it a vision, or a waking dream? Fled is that music:– Do I wake or sleep?"

    [edit] Mortality
Both the third and sixth stanzas contain references to mortality and death. The third stanza discusses the death of Keats's brother, Tomatzi, while the sixth expresses Keats' own fear of death. "Half in love with easeful Death," found in the sixth stanza, shows his fear, not of death, but of a slow, painful one from Consumption (the illness was common in his family, and by this point he had already begun to show the earliest signs of the disease). "Soft names," on the following line, is almost like the communication between two lovers. "Seems it rich to die" demonstrates the level of ecstasy he is experiencing, that a man so much in love with life and afraid of death would welcome it. The stanza finishes on an anti-climax with the deliberately clumsy "sod."

    [edit] Synesthetic metaphor
The poet makes use of synesthetic metaphor throughout the ode to demonstrate the speaker's confusion. For example, in the second stanza, the protagonist expresses a longing for "a draught of vintage." However the description of the taste he desires is not commonly associated with a beverage. He demands that it taste "of Flora and the country green," Flora being the goddess of flowers. He also requests that it taste of "Dance, and Provençal song, and sunburnt mirth," implying that there is a wine he drank there that conjures vivid recollections of a holiday. In the fifth stanza he claims that he cannot see "what soft incense hangs upon the boughs." Of course, incense would be smelt, not seen; the implication here is that the hallucination is so vivid he would almost be able to see smells and sounds, if it were not for the lack of light.[citation needed]

    The Victorian Era
    (1837 - 1901)

    by Ilana Miller

The Victorian era is generally agreed to stretch through the reign of Queen Victoria (1837-1901). It was a tremendously exciting period when many artistic styles, literary schools, as well as, social, political and religious movements flourished. It was a time of prosperity, broad imperial expansion, and great political reform. It was also a time, which today we associate with "prudishness" and "repression". Without a doubt, it was an extraordinarily complex age, that has sometimes been called the Second English Renaissance. It is, however, also the beginning of Modern Times.

The social classes of England were newly reforming, and fomenting. There was a churning upheaval of the old hierarchical order, and the middle classes were steadily growing. Added to that, the upper classes' composition was changing from simply hereditary aristocracy to a combination of nobility and an emerging wealthy commercial class. The definition of what made someone a gentleman or a lady was, therefore, changing at what some thought was an alarming rate. By the end of the century, it was silently agreed that a gentleman was someone who had a liberal public (private) school education (preferably at Eton, Rugby, or Harrow), no matter what his antecedents might be. There continued to be a large and generally disgruntled working class, wanting and slowly getting reform and change.

Conditions of the working class were still bad, though, through the century, three reform bills gradually gave the vote to most males over the age of twenty-one. Contrasting to that was the horrible reality of child labor which persisted throughout the period. When a bill was passed stipulating that children under nine could not work in the textile industry, this in no way applied to other industries, nor did it in any way curb rampant teenaged prostitution.

The Victorian Era was also a time of tremendous scientific progress and ideas. Darwin took his Voyage of the Beagle, and posited the Theory of Evolution. The Great Exhibition of 1851 took place in London, lauding the technical and industrial advances of the age, and strides in medicine and the physical sciences continued throughout the century. The radical thought associated with modern psychiatry began with men like Sigmund Feud toward the end of the era, and radical economic theory, developed by Karl Marx and his associates, began a second age of revolution in mid-century. The ideas of Marxism, socialism, feminism churned and bubbled along with all else that happened.

The dress of the early Victorian era was similar to the the Georgian age. Women wore corsets, balloonish sleeves and crinolines in the middle 1840's. The crinoline thrived, and expanded during the 50's and 60's, and into the 70's, until, at last, it gave way to the bustle. The bustle held its own until the 1890's, and became much smaller, going out altogether by the dawning of the twentieth century. For men, following Beau Brummell's example, stove-pipe pants were the fashion at the beginning of the century. Their ties, known then as cravats, and the various ways they might be tied could change, the styles of shirts, jackets, and hats also, but trousers have remained. Throughout the century, it was stylish for men to wear facial hair of all sizes and descriptions. The clean shaven look of the Regency was out, and mustaches, mutton-chop sideburns, Piccadilly Weepers, full beards, and Van Dykes (worn by Napoleon III) were the order of the day.

The "prudishness" and "repressiveness" that we associate with this era is, I believe, a somewhat erroneous association. Though, people referred to arms and legs as limbs and extremities, and many other things that make us titter, it is, in my opinion, because they had a degree of modesty and a sense of propriety that we hardly understand today. The latest biographies of Queen Victoria describe her and her husband, Albert, of enjoying erotic art, and certainly we know enough about the Queen from the segment on her issue, to know that she did not in anyway shy away from the marriage bed. The name sake of this period was hardly a prude, but having said that, it is necessary to understand that the strictures and laws for 19th Century Society were so much more narrow and defined that they are today, that we must see this era as very codified and strict. Naturally, to an era that takes more liberties, this would seem harsh and unnatural.

Culturally, the novel continued to thrive through this time. Its importance to the era could easily be compared to the importance of the plays of Shakespeare for the Elizabethans. Some of the great novelists of the time were: Sir Walter Scott, Emily, Anne, and Charlotte Bronte, Anthony Trollope, George Eliot, Oscar Wilde, and, of course, Charles Dickens. That is not to say that poetry did not thrive - it did with the works of the Brownings, Alfred, Lord Tennyson, the verse of Lewis Carroll and Rudyard Kipling.

An art movement indicative of this period was the Pre-Raphaelites, which included William Holman Hunt, Dante Gabriel Rossetti, Christina Rossetti, and John Everett Millais. Also during this period were the Impressionists, the Realists, and the Fauves, though the Pre-Raphaelites were distinctive for being a completely English movement.
As stated in the beginning, the Victorian Age was an extremely diverse and complex period. It was, indeed, the precursor of the modern era. If one wishes to understand the world today in terms of society, culture, science, and ideas, it is imperative to study this era.

    McDonald’s vs. Burger King

In diagnosing the McDonald's organization, the first issue we will examine is their company goals. McDonald's has a goal of one hundred percent total customer satisfaction. However, they do realize that this goal is not always attainable. Therefore, if for any reason they do not meet that goal, they will do whatever it takes to correct their mistake. McDonald's has a second company goal that sets them apart from most of their competitors. McDonald's was founded on the principle of giving back to the community, and that remains one of their primary goals today. Through their charities, Ronald McDonald’s House and Ronald McDonald’s Children's Charities, McDonald's has pumped millions of dollars back into the community over the years. McDonald's customer service policy is laid out in the McDonald's Guarantee. The McDonald's Guarantee states, Your food will be hot. Your service will be fast and friendly. And your drive-thru orders will be double-checked right. If you're not satisfied, we'll make it right. Or your next meal is on us. Guaranteed. The customer service procedures of McDonald's are centered on focusing on one customer at a time. They are more concerned with the quality of the service than the speed of the service. Employees usually take only one order at a time. They then prepare that order while the customers wait. After the present customer is satisfied, they move on to the next customer. This procedure allows great accuracy and quality, but lacks speed. McDonald's climate was not very appealing. Everything appeared to be focused around the business instead of the customers. Employees were working at a rapid pace, but it seemed like they had no time for customers. They acted as if it was a burden for them to stop and answer a simple question or refill a drink. The atmosphere was also very noisy. There was constant beeping, banging, and yelling coming from the service area. They did not provide a pleasant ambiance for customers to dine in. McDonald's communication and leadership were also lacking. The only communication between employees and customers was the placement of orders. The employees provided no feedback in terms of double-checking orders or communicating any delays that might occur. Communication between employees consisted of loud yelling throughout the kitchen. In terms of leadership, we did not see a manager present during our entire visit. Diagnosing Burger King was a little more difficult because they do not provide customers with literature (pamphlets) communicating goals and policies, as McDonald's does. However, Burger King's goals seemed quite clear. They want to individualize each customer's order and provide the fastest service possible. Burger King's policy is to give the customer many choices and to accurately and quickly provide whatever the customer chooses. This policy is reflected in their slogan, Your way, right away. Operating under this policy makes it very easy to achieve their goals. Through the many choices they provide it is easy to customize each order. Burger King's procedures are also consistent with their goals. In order to individualize each order they provide customers with many options when ordering. Some options include fries or onion rings, cheese, bacon, mustard, ketchup, mayonnaise, lettuce, tomato, pickles, and onion. The customer can pick any combination of these options that they desire. To facilitate fast service Burger King takes customer orders on a continual basis. One employee takes the customer's order, the customer then moves down the line where another employee is preparing the order. Meanwhile, the original employee is taking another customer's order. Customers also get their own drinks while they are waiting for their meal. This makes service much faster in that employees do not have to prepare drinks or provide refills. The climate at Burger King was very pleasant. The employees conveyed the attitude that they were there to assist the customers in any way possible. The restaurant was very clean and there were no loud noises from the service area. They also provided relaxing music for customers to listen to while dining. Burger King possessed more than adequate communication and leadership. Employees gave the customers feedback on their orders. Each customer received a receipt, which enabled them to double-check their order. The employees also read the order back to the customer before handing them the order. In terms of leadership, there was a manager in plain sight throughout our visit. The manager showed involvement by taking orders and coaching employees. Our group compared and contrasted McDonald’s and Burger King as follows: Comparison between McDonald's and Burger King Analysis: I. Organizational Goals Both McDonald's and Burger King share the same basic organizational goals of profitability, sales volume, fast and courteous service, and cleanliness. There are minor variations to these goals by both companies. II. Organizational Structure When observing McDonald's and Burger king, the organizational structures of the two restaurants were very similar. There appeared to be a crew leader who was a non-managerial employee and, there was a manager who was present behind the counter. The managers of the restaurants seemed to be in control of every aspect of the entire food service process. He had keys to the store, and registers, and also was the only one to take phone calls. One might assume that because both restaurants are chains, there is a hierarchy of command. There is perhaps a regional manager, then a district manager, all the way up to a CEO of McDonald's and Burger King. The distinction between the management and the staff was very clear and apparent by looking at their uniforms. III. Technology Both McDonald's and Burger King are on the cutting edge of technology. They both employ state of the art cash registers and both have electric timers built into their cooking machines. Although the cooking styles vary between Burger King and McDonald's, the method of production is the same. Large batches of food are cooked at once then placed under heat lamps or put in the microwave when an order is placed. Both stores have the same drive through technology with a speaker and a well-lit menu to relay the message to the cooks. Usually whoever takes the order is also the same person to collect the money; however, a different person usually puts the order together for the customer. IV. Employee Motivation The motivation of both stores for employees to perform well is hard to ascertain from just observing, but it appears somewhat obvious. The people working in these establishments appear to have a lower social economic status, and the fact that a paycheck is coming at the end of the week may be the only motivation they have. The stores do have an employee of the month plaque on the wall, but it is doubtful that this is motivation to strive day in and day out for. There is also the fear of potentially losing their jobs if they perform sub standard. V. Communication Both stores employed a very open communication policy. Employees were talking, sometimes shouting at one another to be heard. The management was openly involved in the employees routines and the employees felt no barriers to prevent their communication with the manager. Sometimes in both stores, there would be a break down in communication somewhere along the line and that would result in extended waiting times for customers and sometimes, screwed up orders. VI. Environment The environment at McDonald's and Burger King seems to be a simple, yet unstable one. It is apparent that the majority of people who work there, are not choosing their employment as a career option. Therefore, the workforce is constantly changing and adapting to new employees and new situations. VII. Job Design The design of the job in both McDonald's and Burger King ran smoothly at times. There was autonomy between the different positions. For example, the fry person would just make fries. If he ran into a problem, he could use his knowledge of the fry machine to fix the problem without having to go to management. There was a visual barrier between the different positions, however no position seemed more glorified than another one. VIII. Leadership Style There was similar leadership style employed by the management at both stores. Task orientation was essential to meeting the goal of fast food. Each person had to be focused on the task at hand, because during certain hours of the day, both stores were very busy. There seemed to be little flexibility from management if it meant compromising their goals. IX. Policies/Procedures/Rules/Standards Standardization seemed to be the key at both stores. One can walk into any McDonald's in the country and find that a Big Mac is the same everywhere. Similarly, a Whopper will taste the same at every location. Therefore, the ingredients, and cooking methods must remain constant throughout. There can be no variation. Rules and procedures were posted on clear signs and made directly available to the employee. X. Organization Climate There seemed to be individual autonomy for the most part at both stores. However, the reward system was not easy to identify. They seemed expected to do their job consistently and accurately, perhaps in fear of punishment. They received cooperation from management as long as they were working diligently. Contrast between McDonald’s and Burger King Analysis: I. Organizational Goals At first glance there are no posters on the wall that state the goals that McDonald’s are trying to each. A customer can find a list of the McDonald’s goals in what look to be children’s flyers round the restaurant. The flyers stated that McDonald’s goal is “100% total customer satisfaction.” Also if you weren’t completely happy with your meal that the restaurant would do whatever it took to make it right. This is not a very realistic goal for a fast food restaurant because with the amount of food that is served everyday there is no way that every customer will be satisfied. When I got to Burger King there were no pamphlets for the customer to read. There was nothing that let the consumer know what the company was all about. There was a large sign, which read the slogan “Workin for You.” This was what appeared to be the organization goal and it was interesting to see that the slogan was in improper English. Although this goal is much more realistic than the McDonald’s counterpart. II. Organizational Structure Although the structure of the two organizations are basically the same there were two differences that I noticed. One difference is in the specific tasks of the employees working the front. In McDonald’s there is one person who takes your order and gets your food. Only one person is helped at a time because the cashier has to wait for the food and then serve you. In Burger King there are two separate stations to order and then pick up your food. At the beginning of the line the customer orders and pays in exchange for a number. Then you move down the line to where the customer picks up the food in accordance with the number. This greatly speeds up the lines and reduces the waiting time. The other difference is in the management. At both restaurants there is one manager that handles all the employees working at the time. In McDonald’s the manager was no where to be found but in Burger King the manager was at the front letting himself be seen and talking with the customers. He also wore a different colored uniform to signify his position in the organization. III. Technology The production level of the two restaurants is the main difference in their technology. McDonald’s makes their food in mass production. The burgers are already made and waiting under a heat lamp for you when you order. They are separated into rows depending on what type of burger you order. In Burger King the burgers aren’t already put together. The burger is cooking in the back but the toppings aren’t added till the individual orders come. This gives the customer a better chance of getting a fresh meal. IV. Communication There wasn’t much communication going on in McDonald’s when we were there. The cashiers didn’t smile and weren’t that polite when taking my order. The communication between the cashiers and the cooks consisted of the cashiers screaming into the kitchen. The manager wasn’t around so I wasn’t able to see the manager’s interactions with the staff. At Burger King I was welcomed by a smile. The cashiers were nice and even held a conversation with me. The manager was out in front conversing with the staff and the employees. The staff appeared to treat the manager as a friend instead of a superior. V. Environment McDonald’s environment was neither customer nor employee friendly. Everything in the restaurant is colored brown which just isn’t inviting to customers. The staff has pinstriped uniforms that resemble prison uniforms. The restaurant was also badly lighted which didn’t help the color. In Burger King there were windows everywhere and the restaurant was extremely bright. The staff wore bright colored uniforms and there was music playing which was enjoyable for the customers as well as the staff. After our group observed the interactions between management, employees, and customers at both operations, we discovered a few areas where Burger King and McDonald’s both needed improvement. To begin with, our McDonald’s experience was overall enjoyable, yet a few small, but important, details should be considered. Most of the employees’ uniforms were worn properly and neatly, but the rest were just plain sloppy. Shirts should be tucked in and clean, and hats should be worn the way hats were meant to be worn. This would show that employees value their jobs, and take them seriously. While we were dining, we could not help but notice the loud, high pitched, constant beeping noises coming from the kitchen area. These extremely irritating noises did not stop the entire time. This prevents the guests from enjoying their meals in a soft, relaxing atmosphere. Quiet background music at McDonald’s would probably help the ambiance a bit and offset some of the noises coming from the kitchen. We also noticed that even though it was not busy, there was not a manager in sight. In fact, we can not be sure that one was on duty at the time of our visit. At Burger King it was nice to see the manager working along with the employees by taking orders and preparing food. The major problem that we found with Burger King was the lack of menu consistency. The location that we visited did not offer salads, while most other Burger King’s do. We feel that if a salad is available at one location, then a customer should expect to be able to enjoy the same salad at any Burger King. It is comforting to a customer to know that the food will be the same (in preparation and availability) at whichever store he or she chooses to visit. We did enjoy how they were willing to accommodate our personalized orders, but it is not appropriate to charge for one slice of tomato or lettuce. McDonald’s did advertise quite a bit of community involvement and service. At Burger King we did not see signs of any type of contribution to the community. People may think that the company is greedy and only cares about profit. A charity would show that Burger King cares about the community. In addition, both of these restaurants desperately need to incorporate the fundamentals of great service into their game plans. It would make a tremendous difference if a cashier would very simply smile and say “thank you” after returning your change. From the expressions on the faces of some of the employees we felt as if we ruined their entire day just by walking through the door! Personality and attitude should be major considerations when hiring employees. Hire only those who will take pride in their jobs, be professional, and treat the guests very well. Our final recommendation for both operations is to adopt a “Total Quality Management” philosophy. Food should come out with the right ingredients and at the correct temperature. It is a waste of time and money to make an order over again if it is not perfect the first time. With better training and communication there should be no reason for orders to be less than perfect. The proper attention could be directed to the next customer waiting in line. If things are done correctly the first time, it will save aggravation for the guest, who, by the way, will remember that his order came out exactly how he wanted it. Basically, just take care of the customer. Give employees the power to do whatever it takes to make them happy. Exceed their expectations and, in return, you will have a life long patron. He will be back again, and again, increasing long run profitability. This concept should be applied to McDonald’s as well as Burger King, to helpattain their corporate goals.
