‘Cappucino’
The word ‘Cappucino’ is commonplace in the modern incarnation of the English language and is easily associated with the drink we all love, but it took almost 500 years and several derivations to get there.
The origin of the term can be traced back to the Capuchin order of friars, established in 1525, who played an important role in bringing Catholicism back to Reformation Europe. The order’s Italian name came from the long pointed cowl, or ‘cappuccino’, derived from ‘cappuccio’, “hood,” that was worn as part of the order's habit. The French version of ‘cappuccino’ was ‘capuchin’ (now ‘capucin’), from which came English ‘Capuchin’.
In Italy ‘cappuccino’ went on to develop another sense, “espresso coffee mixed or topped with steamed milk or cream,” so called because the colour of the coffee resembled the colour of the habit of a Capuchin friar. The first use of ‘cappuccino’ in English is recorded in 1948.
