The Lexical Approach

Hi all,

I am an applied linguistics researcher. I have some questions in mind and would like to discuss your views of the lexical approach by Michael Lewis.

The lexical approach presented a new view of language and offered a more detailed account of lexis.

As an English teacher:
1- What do you think of the approach?
2-How would you use it (or use parts of it) in your classroom teaching?
3-What do you think of the present-practice-produce paradigm VS. observe-hypothesize-experiment paradigm?
4-Why do you tend to spend more of your classroom time to presenting grammatical strucures rather than developing your students' lexis?

What I want to say is that the approach offered a more understanding of the nature of lexis
This approach is very interesting for me as I intend to investigate it in my thesis
I do not want, however, to affect your (as English teachers) understanding + interpretation and application of the approach in your classrooms since this is the core of my investigation

I want to see how exactly you teach vocabulary in your classroom as well as getting your opinions on why do teachers of English tend to focus on grammar (not vocabulary) in their teaching

About your last question I believe that here in Ksa the system of teaching English doesnt help the teacher to focus on vocabulary as much as grammar. I mean word study lesson is the most boring lesson as I heard . I am not a teacher but I have taught students before ^.^
