    What benefits do immigrants get?

If this is a serious research project, then you need to look at how the whole benefit system works.

Benefit entitlement depends on visa status. Generally speaking, anyone who does not have ILR (Indefinite Leave to Remain)or British citizenship will have "no recourse to public funds" marked in their passports; this includes visitors, people on spouse visas, students, work visa holders, etc. However, once someone has ILR they have the same entitlements as British citizens in the same circumstances, they can access JSA, Housing Benefit, go on the council waiting list, etc.

Major exceptions to this concern EU citizens, who can claim "in-work" benefits like housing benefit, in the first year, and all benefits after one year working (and there are different rules for "old" EU countries than for A8 and A2 ones); also there are other countries we have reciprocal agreements with.

Asylum-seekers are on a whole different system, not allowed to work or claim any mainstream benefits, they receive £35/week from the Home Office and basic acommodation while their claims are being processed. If they are accepted as refugees, they are given full entitlement, if they are refused they get nothing (and are still not allowed to work).

The major flaw in the system as far as I am concerned is that in the UK natives and other eligible people (ILR, refugee) can access benefits without ever having worked. Many countries only operate contributory schemes, or else the non-contributory schemes are only for a limited period. I think it is inevitable that we will go the same way for those capable of work.

What are the most recent developments regarding immigration?

The immigration debate has been stoked by the recent passage of an Arizona law. The act makes it a state misdemeanor crime for an alien to be in Arizona without carrying registration documents required by federal law, steps up state and local law enforcement of Federal immigration laws, and cracks down on those sheltering, hiring and transporting illegal aliens. Critics of the legislation say it encourages racial profiling, while supporters say the law simply enforces existing federal law. There have been protests in opposition to the law in over 70 U.S. cities, including calls for a boycott of Arizona. Polling has found the law to have majority support in Arizona and nationwide.
Immigration was poised to be a major issue in the 2008 Presidential campaign. Republicans had stalled all Congressional attempts to resolve the issue of undocumented aliens through legislation with the expectation that the Presidential candidate would take advantage of the anti-immigrant attitudes of many voters. However, like President Bush, John McCain is a moderate on the issue has voted for a legalization process. The 2008 Republican platform is silent on the legalization issue but opposes amnesty, strict border enforcement, and foolproof workplace enforcement. The 2008 Democratic platform urges a similar commitment to border and workplace enforcement but supports a system that requires undocumented immigrants who are in good standing to pay a fine, pay taxes, learn English, and go to the back of the line for the opportunity to become citizens.
In June 2007, the Senate rejected bi-partisan compromise legislation (Click to see vote chart) which had been introduced in attempt to resolve the immigration controversy. The measure proposed to allow illegal immigrants to obtain a renewable visa if they were present on January 1, 2007. Additional visas would have been awarded to temporary workers. A worker verification system and increased border security system had to be in place before the visa programs go into effect. A special, less burdensome path to legal status was provided for undocumented agricultural workers and high school graduates who came to the U.S. illegally with their parents.
Despite its bi-partisan origins, the legislation was defeated largely because of deep divisions in public sentiment regarding the proper response to the massive-scale illegal immigration which has occurred in the U.S. during the past 15 years. Legislative efforts to address the problem to date have been limited to increased funding for border security. In May 2006, the Senate passed reform measure which provided for stricter border control but also allowed for a legalization process for many illegal immigrants presently in the country. (Click to see vote chart) This measure appeared to have the Bush Administration's support, but the House deliberately delayed any action. In March 2007, the Bush Administration announced a major change in policy; advocating a very costly visa and legalization process, some of which was added to the compromise legislation. Immigrants and their supporters initially reacted bitterly to this change which appears to be an effort to mollify nativist sentiments.
Surveys indicate that the American public is very concerned about the illegal immigration situation (Click to see chart) and the subject dominates conservative-oriented talk radio. Various grassroots movements have developed concerning the issue. A volunteer citizen group calling themselves the "Minutemen" patrolled the Arizona border in April 2005 for the purpose of discouraging entrants drawing considerable publicity. Other efforts have sought to expose persons who are employing day labor at various pick up locations. Republican political analysts are preparing to use immigration as a "wedge issue" much as they have used abortion and gun control.
Despite public sentiment, there appear to be powerful moneyed interests which support the present system which provides a steady, compliant, low wage labor force in an economy that has a low level of unemployment. This is particularly true in the agricultural sector. The arrangement also benefits Mexico. Although Mexico now has a fertility rate comparable to the U.S., it had an unsustainable birth rate in the 1960's and 1970's and its economic development could not match the growth of its working age population.

The stark reality is that the illegal immigration situation could be resolved very quickly through simple enforcement of existing legislation. If job site enforcement was anywhere near the level it was in the early 90's (when border security was lax), perhaps over 90% of illegal immigrants would permanently leave the country and the entire process could take less than a month. Immigration opponents have more than a sufficient reason to be outraged at this lack of enforcement of the nation's laws. Yet virtually all analyists agree that the expulsion of the nation's illegal immigrants would at this point cause a massive economic disruption.

    Benefits of Immigration

As you know, immigration is the movement through which individual permanently move their place of residence from a particular country to another. Immigration is a concept that is widely talked about and debated. In the past five years, there have been about 8 million immigrants that came to the US, a statistical high, which has stirred much public debate. You see, immigration has its distinct advantages and disadvantages. Let us look at some of the benefits of immigration:

    1. Economic gains
Critics have claimed that immigrants take on jobs, lower down wages, and drain too much tax money because of social services. However, what they do not realize that the jobs immigrants take are the job most citizens in the host country do not take. Immigrants filling up these jobs lighten the load of producers and consumers, and results in gains in economic welfare. It is a fact that immigrants are a source of low cost labor, but these cost reductions are eventually passed on to the consumer, so host country citizens benefit from this as well. The goods produced through the efforts of immigrant workers can also generate additional profits as the goods can be sold at lower price.

    2. Increase in cultural diversity
The world seems to be growing smaller by the day, with different cultures within reach today than ever before. Immigration increases product diversity, something that many people enjoy very much. Immigrants moving in means more ethnic restaurants to dine in, more cultural centers to enjoy, and easier access to products only available in other countries.

    3. Increase in standard of living in the part of immigrants
Immigration brings about change and development. An immigrant would not have moved have they not imagined better standard of living. The quality of life is significantly improved with immigration. This benefit is usually not experienced by the host country, yet it is one of the most important benefits immigration provides. It brings immigrants better opportunities, better chances to fulfill their goals, and a better life overall.

    4. A younger workforce
The ratio of retired people to workers is expected to dramatically increase in the coming decades that would result to significant changes in the Security System (i.e. benefits). Immigrants, with their children and younger relatives, will bring in more young workforce that can slow down the increase of this very important ratio.

    5. Skilled workers in much needed sectors.
Immigrants usually arrive because of employment preference. This means that they offer skills that are very scarce in the country. This will bring about various advantages. For example, if the supply of native neurologists is low, influx of more neurologist immigrants will significantly help the health care industry.

Immigration does have its disadvantages: greater poverty, increase in crimes, lower unskilled wage, education costs, and a few others. However, the positive benefits of immigration far outweigh the disadvantages in many ways. So, let us welcome change and welcome the benefits that immigration provides the country.
