Good writers always know who their audience is.
author
- the writer of a novel or short story
You are the author of everything you write and publish.
character traits
- the personality and appearance of the people in the story
The author can tell us about character traits directly or let us make up our own minds about them indirectly.
characterisation
- the way the author portrays the different characters
In direct characterisation the author tells us directly about the personality of the people in the story. In indirect characterisation we infer this for ourselves.
climax
- the turning point or most exciting part in a story
The climax of a story usually comes towards the end.
conflict
- the struggle or problem in a story
The conflict in a story can be internal or external. An example of an external conflict is a war between two countries.
description
- the way an author paints a picture in words of a person, thing or place
The description of exotic foreign places is a reason why travel writing is so popular.
dialogue
- the talk of two people in a story
Good writers use dialogue to show the character traits of the different characters in the story.
flashback
- when the writer interrupts the story to go back into the past
A flashback is a popular way of connecting a past event with the action in progress.
foreshadowing
- clues that hint at future events in a story
Horror stories often contain foreshadowing - the writer tries to build up suspense and prepare us for the horrible things that are going to happen later.
hero
- the most important person
In adventure stories the hero does brave and dangerous things to save the world. Spiderman and superman are comic heroes.
mood
- the feeling or atmosphere conveyed by the story
The mood of a story can be light and happy, or dark and serious.
narrator
- the person telling the story
The narrator can be the author (a third-person narrator) or a character in the story itself (a first person narrator).
novel
- a long piece of writing, usually about many characters and happening over a longer period of time
Some very popular novels about English life and characters were written by Charles Dickens in the 19th century.
opinion
- what the reader thinks of the story
Two people who have read the same story very often have different opinions about how good it is.
plot
- what happens in a story; the course of events
The plot of some stories is very complicated, with many characters and action that happens over a long period of time.
resolution
- where the story is closed and problems solved
The resolution comes right at the end of a story, usually after the climax.
setting
- time and place of a story happens
The author usually writes about the setting at the beginning of the story.
symbol
- a real object that is used by the writer to stand for an idea
A flower that blooms and then dies is often used as a symbol of the love between two people that is fresh and beautiful at first but then slowly disappears as both get older.
theme
- the main idea of the story
The theme of the story is not always easy to discover. Many writers make the theme a message about life and living that they would like us to think about
