Voices from the past
A log house..one hundred miles from a railroad, forty miles from the nearest post office, and half a dozen miles from any neighbors save (except for)Indians, wolves,

When you first came we were very many, and you were few; now you are many, and we are getting very few, and we are poor.
Red cloud, chief of the Teton Sioux,1870
The firing of guns in and around town was so continuous that it reminded me of a fourth of July celebration. There was shooting when I got up and when I went to bed.
I am tired of fighting. Our chiefs are killed . The old men are all dead. It is the young men who now say yes or no. He who led the young men is dead. It is cold and we have no blankets. The little children are freezing to death. My people-some of them have run away to the hills and have no blankets and no food. No one knows where they are... I want to have time to look for my children and see how many of them I can find. Maybe I shall find them among the dead. Hear me , my chiefs, my heart is sick and sad. . . From where the sun now stands Joseph will fight no more.
Chief Joseph, 1877
The western country is rapidly filling up . . . Immigration is following the railroad lines and then spreading right and left . . . What is to become of the Indians?
Carl scherzo, secretary of the interior, 1881
Here it is not asked what or who was your father, but the question is, what are you?
Scandinavian immigrant in Minnesota,19th century
I was thrilled with the realization of what this freedom of education meant. A little girl from across the alley came and offered to conduct us to school. . . We knew the word school. We understood. . .the doors stood open for every one of us. This incident impressed me more than anything. Mary anith, Russian immigrant, 1894
To be a poor man is hard, but to be a poor race in a land of dollars is the very bottom of hardship.
W.E.B. Du Boise, African-American leader, 1903

Nothing on this earth is as valuable as peace and security. it is a valuable treasure every one has to look for. Nothing can bring happines even money once horror is surrounding us.It is not like what W.E.B. Du Boise, African-American leader said To be a poor man is hard, but to be a poor race in a land of dollars is the very bottom of hardship. For me anf for all people who suffered form wars , peace and security is our goal and hope.
