Unit 1

Fighting Fires
Fire is dangerous because it can start anywhere and very fast . So, fighting fires is a hard but important job.
Firemen must have good training to be able to deal with different kinds of fires . There are chemical fires , oil , gas and electrical fires . Firemen`s main job is to put out fires but they also rescue people and tour schools .

Unit 2
Accidents in the home
The most common accidents in the house are falls, cuts, burns , scalds, electrocution, suffocation and poisoning . Cuts are from sharp things .Burns are from fire .Scalds are from boiling water .Electrocution is from using unsafe electric appliances .Suffocation is from plastic bags and gassing .Poisoning is from eating or drinking something bad . Young children and very old people have the most accidents in the home . Most accidents in the home take place in the kitchen . We can prevent accidents in the home if we take some simple precautions .

Unit 3
The Early Spread of Islam
In the first year of Hijrah calendar , Prophet Mohammad peace be upon him and his followers moved from Makkah to Madinah . People welcomed them happily . There , he taught people the Holy Qura`n . Since then , the Islamic message has spread all over the world .
Enemies of Islam tried to stop its spread . As the Muslims advanced to the north , the Romans soldiers met them .
But the Muslims captured Damascus and Jerusalem . In the east, they met the Persian soldiers . Islam spread into Turkey and reached the borders of China . In North Africa, they had to fight against the Romans again . They took Egypt , Algeria and Morocco .
Finally , Islam spread into Spain and Portugal

Unit 4
The Food We Eat

Everyone needs to be healthy and to stay alive . However , we cannot eat only one kind of food . We need a balanced diet . In other , we need food which contains five important substances : proteins ,minerals, carbohydrates ,fats and vitamins .
Energy in is measured in calories . A person need about 40 calories a day for each kilo that he weighs . If you eat more calories than you need , your body stores the extra calories as fat .

Unit 5
Saudi Arabia in the Past and Today

In the past , People used to live in traditional houses made of mud , wood
and straw . Women used to get water from wells . People used to light houses by oil lamps . Cooking was done on an open fire . Mothers used to make remedies from plants and trees . There were no formal schools . They used to sit and listen to stories
Nowadays , People live in modern ,spacious houses made of concrete ,metal
and glass. Water is pumped into houses on taps . People use electricity in lighting houses .Cooking is done on gas and electric cookers . People have medical treatment at modern hospitals . Children go to free formal school.They listen to the radio , watch TV. Or play computer games .
