The advantage of the English language is that it serves as an international lingua franca. It is very versatile and useful.

The disadvantage of the English language is that people think they can speak English and yet they don't. A lot of misunderstandings happen when two non-English persons converse with each other in English, each person has a different conception of what was said.

Hard to believe ? English is a difficult language to speak properly. Most people don't.

A much more serious disadvantage for learners of English is the extent of the vocabulary. Since English draws from many different sources for vocabulary words (Latin, Greek, French, German, Sanskrit, etc.) we often have many words for the same concept. (For example, 'sky' and 'heaven' both point to that place upstairs but have different source languages)

Another disadvantage of English is its reliance on rigid word order for meaning. Other languages that have meaning built into the words themselves, (German, English's mother language, is a good example) are able to be more free with word order, which can be more forgiving to learners.

The Advantages and Disadvantages of English language to Foreign Students

The dominance of English-speaking destinations such as Australia, Canada, the U.K and the U.S.A may be largely attributable to the fact that students intending to study abroad are most likely desired to learn and be proficient with the English language. This linguistic consideration can be drawn as a positive or an advantage point in which the host country acquires economic gains. Some foreign universities offer good academic programs in order to attract students coming from other countries. In this view, when there is an influx of students coming from foreign lands to a single host country, say for example, Belgium, it could be practically thought that in exchange for good academic programs is the generation of economic profits for Belgium.

Enough for the economic side, what is important in asking the advantages of English language to foreign students is on the side of academic performance and knowledge formation. Since, in most of the host countries offering various academic courses and programs are English speaking countries, although, it is quite expensive to gain the academic standards like that of Oxford, Yale, Harvard, Cambridge, and Princeton, a foreign student can gain competitive advantage on acquisition of knowledge when one is more affluent and proficient in using English. As mentioned above, the problem fundamental to a foreign student with less fluency in speaking, writing, and communicating the common use of language creates a hindrance for socialization and academic performance.

Moreover, if a foreign student learns the intricacies of the language used and can speak, write and communicate fluently using the host’s language, definitely it will help allot for an integration process and acculturation to the new environment by having involve in different social gatherings, peer sharing, academic activities and school programs, and more so, the ability to acquire sufficient information and knowledge to the academic programs one is taking while having a chance to achieve one’s set goals and objectives. In addition, it can be an economically inexpensive on the part of a foreign student since; the need for any programs of orientation can be shortened without further financial exertions.

On the other hand, the disadvantages are inevitably constant. Despite the influx of foreign students to some English speaking countries to gain higher academic standards, perennial to international academic students is the learning to speak, write, and communicate well using English as the second language. It can be economically expensive since they need to get extra time to study the language. The inability to socialize with native students and perform well in academic activities and programs can bring negative effect in their acquisition of knowledge and learning. It could be also brought by various external and internal factors like depression, culture shock, stress, anxiety, and racial differences that can lead to stereotyping and bias.

In order that disadvantages can be reduced or minimized, some effective strategies can be invoke like before entering into an international study, one may have to undergo rigorous training and practice on language use. In this way, it can be able to alleviate the problems when already in the host country. In addition, students should undergo several orientations about the social, political and cultural environment of the country where he/she intended to study. In this way, one can avoid the phenomenon of culture shock or cannot be hardly able to socialize with the native people. Moreover, universities which accommodate foreign students for post-grad courses should provide or devise programs favorable to them in order that students’ financial and time expenditures are worthwhile.
