    Work &lifestyle

Why has today's working world changed so much that parents often no longer understand what their sons and daughters do for a living? Is there a connection between the new types of work, professional careers and our understanding of the roles of men and women? These and similar questions are the object of a new concept of social reporting which was drawn up by four social science research institutes and which studies changes in the relationship between work and private lifestyles against the background of social and economic .

    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The working world is changing. Not from one day to the next, but steadily and at an increasing pace. The eight-hour day in the factory or office, lifelong employment in one and the same firm from apprenticeship to retirement, the woman's sole responsibility for the household and bringing up children: Fewer and fewer people are living these kinds of lives today.

Life for most people now is very different: Temporary employment contracts, two or three training courses, interruptions in their working life due to phases of self-employment, further training or unemployment are no longer the exception, particularly as far as men are concerned. Women, on the other hand, are becoming increasingly well qualified. More and more women are working and do not give up work when they have children, but often only stay at home for a short period. In particular, women with children have part-time jobs in order to be able to combine gainful employment with their work in the family.

At the same time, job contents are also changing: Industrial work and unskilled activities are playing a diminishing role. Service activities and qualified activities are becoming increasingly important. Apart from specialist knowledge and vocational qualifications, these activities call for increased commitment, initiative and self-organization, or even the ability to market oneself.

    Food and Nutrition

Every day, we are faced with an abundance of food and nutrition information and choices.
Whether it's maintaining a healthful diet while eating at your favorite restaurant, navigating the shelves at your local grocery store or fueling up for an upcoming 5K run, making the right
food and nutrition choices is a necessary part of everyone's daily life
Eat at least three meals a day and plan your meals ahead of time. Whether
you’re eating at home, packing a lunch or eating out, an overall eating
plan for the day will help keep you on track.
Balance your plate with the right portions of a variety of foods. Half your
plate should be filled with vegetables, one fourth with lean meat, poultry
or fish and one fourth with grains. To round out your meal, add a glass of
fat-free or low-fat milk and a serving of fruit for dessert.
Try changing from a large dinner plate to a smaller one. It may help you
    feel satisfied with reduced portions.
Start your meal with low calorie foods like fruits, vegetables and salads

    Work and Lifestyles

The people in the world are divided: Some are happy with a small amount of money and a compfortable living while others want to earn large amounts of money and become very rich. Each point has his advantages and disadvantages.
Earning a large amount of money means that you can buy whatever you want, you don’t have to look for the prize. This makes you independent from everything and you can live a high life standard. You can travel wherever you want and sleep in luxury accomodations and you don’t have to worry about your financial situation.
But normally earning such a large amount of money means a lot of work with very less free time. This means no time for friends and familiy and other activities, main part in the life is the work.
Many people who work are famous. This means, that also in their free time they have no privateshpere and it is difficult for them to do what they really want to do whithout being recognized by others.
People who earn less money but have a comfortable life are quite often happier than people who earn a lot more. Normally they can spend more time with their friends and family and they are not that busy with their work. Also they are satisfied with small things it doesn’t have to be the big, big car, it can also be a small car, for example.
But people who earn less money they are not free while choosing their stuff. They have to look for cheep things and can’t buy whatever they want. Sometimes this is a little difficult expecially if there are large costs of something. But as a citizen who earns less money you can live your own life and you have your privatsphere.
I think earning less money can make you much more happy than earning large amounts of money. Surely it is great to live in a luxury hotel, but i think that a life with so much money is not as exciting as a life with less money. Means that you can do crazy things. You can work for a while, than quit your job and travel for 6 month. As a high standard person normally that’s not possible and they will loose their money without earning new. And also there is always the fear by the rich people, that there could happen something. If you don’t have so much, you can’t loose so much and this makes your life more easy.

    Nutrition and Food

Since the dawn of the television and movie era, the act and consequences of eating have been portrayed inaccurately. After reviewing nearly a hundred years of motion picture and television archives even the most thorough investigator would be hard-pressed to find a realistic depiction of food. These industries are known for responding to social change in other capacities such as the role of women in society and ever-changing social norms; but when it comes to food, the movie and television industries remains unchanged in its incorrect perception of eating habits.

The film industry has a history of responding to changes in society. Movies and television shows now present women and minorities as equal and they no longer condone spousal abuse or spanking children for wrongdoing. This was not always the case. In the 1950's sitcom, "I Love Lucy," the central character Lucy was seen putting makeup on her face to simulate a bruise. She did this so her husband wouldn't hit her after she made some kind of mistake with the dinner she was cooking. In that era, a plot line such as this was viewed as acceptable; but a similar plot would be loudly protested in modern times. Today's television viewer sees a much different woman in entertainment programs. Women are depicted as strong and independent characters and spousal abuse is never condoned. In this instance, popular culture responded to a change in American culture. Another example of this would be the changing role of blacks in the film industry. In movies made before the 1960s, black characters were rarely portrayed as anything more than porters, janitors, or factory workers. During the civil rights movement, however, we started to see a more representative depiction of African-Americans in culture. For example, Sidney Poitier in "To Sir with Love" was viewed as a major stride for racial equality in the film industry. And now, an African-American actor, Denzel Washington, is considered one of the most popular Hollywood stars. In both of these cases, popular culture reacted to a transitioning society and created a different product.

Yet, when dealing with food, popular culture has not responded to social change. As society now approaches the 21st century, food has become an increasingly volatile issue. In the United States, subjects like eating disorders, obesity, and unhealthy eating habits receive much attention from the media and the medical community. In fact, eating disorders and healthy eating habits are stressed in most high school health curriculums. Despite the importance of these emerging dysfunctions, movies still portray food and eating unrealistically. Attractive characters eat what they want, when they want, and their bodies remain healthy and strong. Characters in the popular sitcom "Friends" have eating habits that most doctors would consider ghastly, but the six actors are all extremely attractive, seemingly unaffected by their diets. These same habits would be extremely harmful to the average person and would be loudly opposed if put into words and advertised in the public; yet popular culture ignores this fact.

Food is held to a double standard in popular culture. Filmmakers who make violent movies claim to do so because society is violent and they have a responsibility to show the audience reality. The same argument is repeated for the use of profane language, sex, and low social standards. Yet even though eating disorders and the proliferation of junk food into the human diet are rampant in our society, no screen writer or moviemaker seems willing to show this reality. Perhaps it may seem like a trite detail that doesn't concern modern audiences or perhaps modern audiences want to see the attractive characters taking on the unattractive personal habits that the average American embraces. Either way, food and food alone is allowed special treatment in the eyes of the movie industry.

The image and importance of food is greatly distorted in popular culture. Though, movies and television have adapted to cultural change in the past, they seem to ignore changes in eating habits. Some argue that movies represent the society from which they emerge. If a society is crime-ridden, its movies will contain a great deal of violent content. If a society uses profane language, that same obscene vocabulary will be utilized on screen. These concepts, though disputed by many, are widely considered valid by numerous communication theorists. Yet, when it comes to simple a simple biological issue like eating, the movie industry blatantly ignores social reality. This theory holds true in nearly all forms of cultural expression.

    Differences in Men and Women

Are women and men really that different? I think so. I am at a stage in my life where I think all men are after one thing. Sex. When I sit here and think about it, I really have to think, do women and men have anything in common. Women communicate in a completely different manner than women. They also enter into a relationship for different reasons. After reading the articles, "Are Men Really from Mars and Women from Venus", "Beyond Mars and Venus" ,and "Do Women and Men Communicate Differently", my opinion is that, men and women do everything in different ways.
The first comparison between women and men is the communication skills. Men to me seem like they never show their feelings. Women love to show their feelings whether its is talking on the phone with a girlfriend, watching a movie, or just by themselves. Women love to talk on the phone to each other, even when it is about nothing. When men talk it is only about practical things, like sports of the season, the latest cars, how to fix something, or how politics has been going. Think about it, how many men do you know that calls another man just to talk. Not many. When men meet women, they usually try their best to carry on a pleasant conversation and have a buddy kind of talk. Most men that I have met, like to talk about themselves and then when you bring up something about yourself, they get bored and start talking about themselves again. Women on the other hand, start talking about her favorite subjects: feelings, friends, her work, many men lose interest or bring the conversation on themselves.
After being around a man a couple of times, the woman is talking to all of her girlfriends and everyone about how the relationship is going and everything that is happening. The man on the other hand would watch a football game and probably wouldn't even tell anyone he went on a date.

    Sleep and Dreams

Sleep is my favorite thing in life. My first waking thought is usually "when will I be able to sleep again?" But why do I love to sleep? What goes on behind my closed eyelids and what does sleep do for me? As early as 350 BC, Aristotle pondered the state of sleep: "With regard to sleep and waking, we must consider what they are: whether they are peculiar to soul or to body, or common to both." Researchers are still engaged in investigating the complexities of sleep. To answers these questions, I turned to the Internet for help. After an exhausting search, weeding through web pages designed for the average insomniac looking for a quick fix to his/her troubles, and technical research papers discussing the specifics of neurobiological functions, I found some helpful writings. What is known is that sleep is founded on patterns of bodily functions and brain activity. While we are asleep, our brains exhibit distinct and separate stages of activity. This paper will discuss the basic patterns and stages of sleep within humans and the functions of each stage. This introduction to sleep will serve as the basis for further research later in the semester.

Sleep follows distinct patterns throughout the day. Circadian rhythms are daily cycles of biological activity which mediate many of our metabolic functions. Blood pressure, heart rate, body temperature and hormonal secretions ebb and flow throughout the day in a cyclic pattern, often referred to as the "biological clock". These rhythms are controlled by the superchaismatic nucleus region of the hypothalamus, which relies on both internal timing mechanisms within specific neurons as well as outside influences to set this clock. The biological clock is kept running by "zeitbergers", that is, any input to the brain such as daylight, the smell of food, or temperature change.

Sleep cycles follow our circadian rhythms. It has been found that the natural hormone melatonin plays a large part in mediating sleep. As darkness falls, enzymes in the brain stimulate the release of melatonin from the pineal gland in the brain. Melatonin induces sleep by influencing the superchiasmatic nucleus. The release of melatonin is halted when daylight arrives, and we experience wakefulness. Other mediators such as seratonin, prolactin and prostaglandin have also been linked to the sleep cycle, but their exact role is unclear.

Upon falling asleep, the brain and body go through five stages of sleep in one sleep cycle. Researches have classified these stages of sleep by monitoring muscle tone, eye movements, and the electrical activity of the brain using an electroencephalogram (EEG). EEG readings measure brain waves and classify them according to speed. Alpha-rhythms are the fastest waves, followed by slower beta rhythms. Theta and delta waves are the slowest. A sleep cycle lasts 90 minutes or so, during which the brain revolves through each type of EEG rhythm. This sleep cycle is repeated approximately five or six times during the course of the night and corresponds to the circadian rhythms which we experience during the day.

The first four stages are considered to be Non-Rapid Eye Movement sleep (NREM) or orthodox sleep. The function of these stages is to restore and rebuild the body after a long period of wakefulness. Vegetative functions dominate NREM sleep. The body temperature, heart rate and blood pressure decrease, muscles relax and the body metabolism slows.

Stage I is a transition between sleep and wakefulness which is usually only five minutes in duration. Short dreams may occur, usually involving images remembered from throughout the day. The brain's electrical activity slows as exhibited by beta-rhythms on the EEG. Stage II is a somewhat deeper level of sleep, characterized by slower breathing and heart rates. The EEG of stage II shows slow beta-rhythms, interspersed with periods of fast alpha-rhythms called sleep spindles and some delta-rhythms. About fifty percent of all sleep in a given night is Stage II. Stages III and IV are the deepest levels of sleep and have the slowest waves as measured by EEG: Stage III has both theta and delta rhythms, while Stage IV has only delta-rhythms. The body uses this time to maintain and restore itself. Growth hormone secretions are at their highest during these stages. Stages III and IV begin after one has been asleep for approximately one half hour. The first episodes of Stage II and IV sleep are usually the longest of the night. As successive cycles of sleep pass, these stages are replaced by longer periods of Stage V sleep.

Stage V is remarkably different from the previous stages. The brain and body become active, increasing heart rate and blood pressure. The eyes shudder quickly back and forth, giving this stage the name Rapid Eye Movement (REM) sleep. EEG patterns for REM sleep are much like those during wakefulness, and include many fast beta-rhythms. It may even be that the brain works harder during REM sleep than when awake. REM sleep usually lasts anywhere from 11 to 25 minutes, typically longer in the later sleep cycles of the night. Approximately 25% of all sleep is REM sleep in adults, in children it is even higher. On completion of a phase of REM sleep, the brain and body return to Stage I, and begin another sleep cycle.

The differences between NREM and REM sleep are drastic. As mentioned above, NREM sleep deals mainly with the regeneration of the body, while REM sleep has much to do with the innerworkings of the brain. But they may certainly be interconnected. Researchers have speculated that NREM sleep also functions to recharge the brain by allowing depleted glycogen supplies to be replenished. Further hypotheses state that the high levels of neurological activity during REM sleep allows ions to be pumped across the membranes of neurons in the brain and stimulate another cycle of NREM sleep.

Researchers have found that much of the information learned throughout the day is processed by our brains during REM sleep. Other brain functions may also be mediated during REM sleep, such as problem solving, memory consolidation and creativity. An experiment performed at the Weizmann Institute in
Israel tested subjects deprived of sleep. It was found that subjects deprived of sleep performed poorer on a memory recall test than subjects who had received adequate sleep. It has also been determined that rats have greater than average durations of REM sleep after being subjected to sustained sessions of learning. Information learned during these sessions can be exhibited as behavior following episodes of REM sleep. The connection between REM sleep and memory may stem from the concept that neurological synapses grow during REM sleep in adults as they do in infants. (Infants spend as much as 50% of their sleep time in REM and researchers speculate that this is when the synapses grows.)

The data processing that occurs during REM sleep may be connected to the fascinating phenomenon of dreaming. It has been speculated that dreaming allows us to organize memories into coherent patterns of learning. Although some superficial dreams occur during NREM sleep, most real dreams occur during the REM stage of the sleep cycle. There are marked differences between NREM dreams and REM dreams. NREM dreams tend to be anchored in reality and experienced as a semiconscious state of serenity. REM dreams are markedly "bizarre", lacking common sense, logic and often characterized by quick transitions in plot and setting. Often, when a person is awakened from REM sleep, they remember vividly the events of their dreams.

Dreaming during REM sleep is also accompanied by wild fluctuations in body metabolism. The heart rate, blood pressure, hormonal secretions and many other functions correspond to the events of a dream. Muscle activity, on the contrary, is almost nonexistent. There is speculation that if the body was not paralyzed during REM dreams, we may even act them out.

A great deal of research has been done to define and categorize sleep. One of the greatest tools available to scientist is the EEG. By measuring the electrical activity of the brain, stages of our sleep can be classified. Further studies on the metabolic functions of our body during NREM sleep will provide insight to how sleep refreshes and energizes. But there are still many questions left about REM sleep. There seem to be many correlations between REM sleep and learning. How do our dreams help us learn and process data? Is there a connection between REM sleep and remembering the events of the previous day? The mechanisms of these processes, as is much of the brain, are not clearly understood. But thinking about REM sleep in this respect will lead to answers in the future. Referring back to Aristotle's question, we must realize that the body does indeed sleep during the NREM stages. However the issue of whether the soul ever sleeps is still in doubt.
